Swirling clouds at the north pole of Saturn (NASA)

This fantastic swirl of clouds at the Saturn’s north pole has been photographed by the Cassini spacecraft on November 27, 2012. The camera was pointing toward Saturn at approximately 224,618 miles (361,488 kilometers) away, and the image was taken using the Continue reading →

Nine new radar images of near-Earth asteroid 2012 PA8 were obtained with data collected by NASA's Deep Space Network antenna (NASA)

A collage shows nine radar images of near-Earth asteroid 2007 PA8 that were obtained between Oct. 31 and Nov. 13, 2012, with data collected by NASA’s 230-foot-wide (70-meter) Deep Space Network antenna at Goldstone, Calif. On Nov. 5 at 8:42 Continue reading →

One year after launch, Curiosity rover busy on Mars

By Thomas Posted 27 Nov 2012 — 0 Comment ↓
This panorama is a mosaic of images taken by the Mast Camera (Mastcam) on the NASA Mars rover Curiosity while the rover was working at a site called "Rocknest" in October and November 2012 (NASA)

The NASA Mars rover Curiosity began its flight to Mars on Nov. 26, 2011, from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla., tucked inside the Mars Science Laboratory spacecraft. One year after launch and 16 weeks since its dramatic landing on Continue reading →

Cassini finds a pair of ‘Pac-Men’ at Saturn

By Thomas Posted 27 Nov 2012 — 0 Comment ↓
Scientists with NASA's Cassini mission have spotted two features shaped like the 1980s video game icon "Pac-Man" on moons of Saturn. One was observed on the moon Mimas in 2010 and the latest was observed on the moon Tethys (NASA/JPL-Caltech/GSFC/SWRI) (thumb)

You could call this “Pac-Man, the Sequel.” Scientists with NASA’s Cassini mission have spotted a second feature shaped like the 1980s video game icon in the Saturn system, this time on the moon Tethys. (The first was found on Mimas Continue reading →

Jupiter’s moon: Io

By Thomas Posted 26 Nov 2012 — 0 Comment ↓
Global image of Io in true colors (NASA)

NASA’s Galileo spacecraft acquired its highest resolution images of Jupiter’s moon Io on 3 July 1999 during its closest pass to Io since orbit insertion in late 1995. This color mosaic uses the near-infrared, green and violet filters (slightly more Continue reading →

The ridged surface of Jupiter’s moon, Europa (NASA)

Reddish spots and shallow pits pepper the ridged surface of Jupiter’s moon, Europa, in this view combining information from images taken by NASA’s Galileo spacecraft during two different orbits around Jupiter. The dark spots are called “lenticulae,” the Latin term Continue reading →
